What Is A Cane Corso?

The Cane Corso ("KAH-neh COR-soh") dog is an ancient Italian molosser and direct descendant of the Canis Pugnax. Its name derives from the Latin "cohors" that means guardian, protector. It has an athletic build and a solid, compact body with free-flowing movement. The combination of its stable character, the absolute devotion to its master and its adaptability to the environment are the reasons of the breed's popularity and success. Historically, the dog was used to guard property and cattle, to hunt large game and the protection of the family. It is a gentle, sociable dog and easily trained to perform the duties for which it has been bred. It is also known as the Cane Corso Italiano, Cane Corso Mastiff, Cane di Macellaio, Italian Mastiff, Sicilian Branchiero. The Cane Corso breed has worldwide FCI recognition and has been recognized by the AKC in the USA since July 1, 2010.

Its name derives from the Latin "cohors" that means guardian, protector. This is just not the case.  The Cane Corso is an Italian dog.  Did it never occur to anyone that it may have an Italian name?  Didn’t anyone think to ask an Italian or use Google Translate?  Cane Corso actually means ‘running dog’.  No crazy Latin nonsense.  The more likely origin of the name is from the word…See More
